Questions

Everything You Wanted to Ask.

What is Chewie?

Chewie is an AI-native kitchen appliance that takes care of your household’s wet waste from start to finish. You drop food waste in as you cook and eat. The lid opens on its own, the AI reads what went in, and Chewie converts it into stabilised Regen Soil™ in 8 to 36 hours. Your only job is emptying a tray of soil about once a month.

Chewie does for wet waste what the washing machine did for laundry: it removes the chore rather than making it slightly easier. It is designed and engineered in Bengaluru by Mankomb, and made in India.

How is Chewie different from food waste dryers and other smart composters?

Most machines on the market are batch devices: fill, run a fixed cycle, empty, repeat. Many are dehydrators that dry and grind scraps into a powder, and most cannot take meat, bones or liquids. Food waste appliances have existed abroad for years; they were not built for oily gravies, rice, bones and the daily volume of an Indian family.

Chewie works differently on four counts:

  • Continuous, not batch. Add waste whenever you like; there is no cycle to wait for.
  • Digestion, not drying. A controlled aerobic process adjusts airflow, moisture, temperature, mixing and carbon-to-nitrogen balance for each load. Nothing is burnt or charred.
  • Indian kitchen waste, as it is. Cooked food, curries, oils, meat and smaller bones all go in.
  • Soil, not scraps. The output is stabilised Regen Soil™, at up to 120 kg of waste a month, with the bio-additive dosed automatically.
Why not just compost in a bin?

If you already compost happily and have the space, keep going. Bin composting works and costs nothing but time, and the time is the problem. It needs regular turning and balancing, takes weeks to months, and struggles with meat, bones, oil and dairy. In an apartment it usually means smell and fruit flies, which is why most urban households who try it eventually stop.

Chewie takes everything an Indian kitchen produces, finishes in 8 to 36 hours, and asks for nothing more than emptying a soil tray about once a month.

What does the AI in Chewie actually do?

Two things, both while Chewie is running.

  • Vision AI looks at each drop-in, identifies the waste type and flags anything that should not be there, such as a spoon or a bottle cap, before it reaches the chamber.
  • Control AI sets the conditions for that specific load: temperature, airflow, moisture, mixing and how much bio-additive to dose.

This matters because Indian kitchen waste changes every day. A dosa-batter morning and a biryani Sunday need different handling, and a fixed-cycle machine either under-processes wet loads or over-dries dry ones. Adjusting per load is how Chewie holds a process success rate above 99% across 200+ Indian household waste profiles in our internal testing.

If the camera is covered or a sensor faults, Chewie falls back to a conservative default cycle and tells you in the app; it does not silently guess. Chewie is software-defined, so it keeps improving after installation through over-the-air updates.

What food waste can go into Chewie?

Almost everything an Indian kitchen produces: vegetable and fruit peels, cooked food and leftovers, curries and gravies, oils, rice, dal, dairy, tea and coffee residue, fish, meat and smaller bones such as chicken bones.

Keep out large mutton bones, large coconut shells and very hard seeds such as mango seeds. The biology can handle them; the shredder should not have to. Non-food items such as plastic, foil, glass, metal and cutlery never go in. The habit that works best is scraping plates and boards straight in as you go, rather than tipping in a full bucket at once.

Do I still need to segregate my waste?

Only in one simple way: food goes into Chewie, everything else does not. That is the same wet and dry separation Indian cities already require under solid waste management rules.

What Chewie removes is the sorting within food waste. Cooked or raw, oily or dry, veg or non-veg, it all goes in the same place, with no separate bucket for bones or leftovers. If a non-food item slips in, the vision system flags it and alerts you before it reaches the chamber.

Will Chewie smell or attract pests?

No. Chewie is a sealed, in-vessel system, so the waste is never open to the room. It keeps conditions aerobic, with controlled air, moisture and temperature, which prevents the anaerobic souring that makes an ordinary bin smell. Exhaust air passes through the OdourShield carbon cartridge.

Because waste goes straight into Chewie instead of sitting in a bucket overnight, there is nothing exposed for fruit flies, cockroaches or rodents to find. Ordinary kitchen hygiene still applies: food spilled on the counter is still food on the counter.

How long does Chewie take to turn waste into soil?

8 to 36 hours, depending on how much you add and what it is. A light load of peels finishes at the quick end; a heavy day of cooked food and bones takes longer. You never wait for a cycle to finish, because Chewie works continuously and you can add waste at any time.

How much waste can Chewie handle? Is it enough for my family?

Up to about 120 kg of wet waste a month, sized for a family of four plus guests. A typical family of four produces 1 to 2 kg of wet waste a day, or 30 to 60 kg a month, so Chewie has headroom for festivals, parties and weekend cooking. Because it reduces volume by about 85%, the soil tray only needs emptying roughly once a month.

What comes out of Chewie? Is Regen Soil™ real soil?

Regen Soil™ is a dark, crumbly, stabilised soil amendment made from your kitchen waste. It is not dried or powdered scraps, which is what a dehydrator produces. Chewie’s controlled aerobic digestion breaks waste down into consistent, soil-like material that collects automatically in an internal tray.

Use it to enrich potted plants, balcony and terrace gardens, or landscaping. We call it Regen Soil™ rather than compost because it is made in hours under controlled conditions, not over months in a pile, and because its quality does not depend on how well someone managed a heap.

Will Chewie fit in my kitchen, and how loud is it?

Chewie measures 60 × 55 × 30 cm and is designed for modular kitchens, placed under or beside the counter. It runs below 40 dB, quieter than a normal conversation, so it can sit in an open kitchen without being noticed. It needs a standard power socket and a water line close by; verified during installation.

Does Chewie need to stay connected to power and water?

Yes, to both. Chewie manages the process continuously, so it stays plugged in, and it rinses its own funnel after every use, so it needs a water line. It runs on a standard 6-amp socket and uses only a small amount of water. Our team makes both connections during installation.

You monitor Chewie through the Mankomb app on iOS and Android, which alerts you when the tray needs emptying, a consumable is due or something unexpected went in.

How much does Chewie cost to run?

About 0.5 units of electricity a day, roughly 15 units a month, which is well under ₹100 on typical Bengaluru domestic tariffs. The only other running cost is consumables: a Regen Additive pack about every three months and an OdourShield cartridge once a year, around ₹3,000 a year together.

For comparison, the bin liners alone that most households buy for wet waste cost about ₹2,700 a year, before cleaning products and pest control.

What maintenance does Chewie need?

Very little:

  • About once a month: empty the Regen Soil™ tray, or sooner when the app alerts you.
  • About every three months: replace the Regen Additive pack.
  • About once a year: replace the OdourShield cartridge.

There is no chamber to scrub and no bin to wash; the funnel cleans itself after every use. Filters are replaceable and components are modular, so anything that needs service is swapped at your home under warranty.

How much does Chewie cost?

Chewie Max is priced at ₹34,999 (MRP ₹37,999). That includes white-glove installation and a demo at your home, and a 36-month on-site warranty covering parts and labour. After purchase, running costs are electricity and around ₹3,000 a year in consumables.

The fair comparison is not a dustbin. It is what the dustbin demands: liners, cleaning products, pest control and the daily trips to the collection point. Our own estimate puts that at ₹9,100 to ₹20,000 a year for a family of four.
